While I don't know much about their use in primary schools, I can see a lot of use in secondary and post-compulsory education. If there was some kind of mashup of wiki and mind/concept mapper I would be stoked.
As long as the task is clearly explained and navigation is easy, I think this is a very useful way of engaging learners – allowing them to work at their own pace and explore areas that are of personal interest but still being part of a group.
Yes I think wiki's can certainly engage learners when the task is interesting and relevant. For first time users the operation of a wiki would need to be clearly shown and explained, in terms of its function and layout.
